Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

AZBOXLA 2024 Indoor Box League

Indoor box lacrosse is the biggest, baddest game on the planet.

Tight space, 30 second shot clock, off ball checking, huge goalies that fill small goals, fast transition from offense to defense . . . Box is like basketball, if basketball was full contact, or hockey with a ball in the air.

Here is a stat for you; 20% of the current NCAA D1 lacrosse players are box players from Canada. Many Canadians play box exclusively, meaning they had no field lacrosse experience before they walked on the field in college. While American youth players are going to field showcases year round, NCAA coaches are traveling to places like Burnaby, Saskatchewan and Vancouver to find talent.

In fact, box is almost an entirely different game from field lacrosse. Box skills however translate very well to the field game.

Here are the Top 5 reasons every youth player should play BOX;

  1. Lacrosse IQ - Box lacrosse is played in a much smaller space than field counterpart. That space restriction creates a much faster tempo and requires quicker decision-making. Players in the box game grow more accustomed to handling the ball and scoring in traffic. This develops a players lacrosse IQ at an accelerated rate

  1. Stick Skills - Players with box experience, in many cases, have superior stick skills than those who have never played the box game before. When returning to the field, players with box lacrosse experience typically have an advantage with more time and space

  1. Scoring - The hardest thing to do in the field game is to score goals and good indoor players have a special knack for it. Box lacrosse players have creative skills around the goal and in tight spaces

  1. Defense - The benefits of a box lacrosse background aren’t only on the offensive end either. Because everyone plays with a short stick, defenseman must rely on proper footwork, positioning, and aggressive checking. At the youth level, all players must play both offense and defense producing well rounded athletes

  1. Ground Balls - Box players are tenacious on “loosies”. Why? One reason is that the rules require a player goes for the ball and not the man. Meaning in box they head straight for the ball and aren’t concerned with anything else.
